Extended Hours

2023 · 3-hour performance, ICA San Francisco

Commissioned as part of ICA San Francisco's Meantime program, Extended Hours made visible the often unseen and unpaid labor of public school teachers. Over three hours during the museum's open hours, three San Francisco public school teachers formed a living sculpture—grading assignments, planning lessons, and completing administrative work.

I used the project’s budget to pay each teacher a stipend for work usually performed off the clock. I also created a handout with data on teacher pay in San Francisco, and a community support form where teachers request specific help in their classroom, and community members could sign up to provide it.
