Jessalyn Aaland is a Bay Area (California) interdisciplinary artist working across social practice, painting, sculpture, print, and works on paper. Her work addresses social issues with humor, hope, and joy, drawing from familiar imagery like flowers and everyday objects to explore themes of education, labor, interconnectivity, social justice, and lesser-known histories. Much of her work examines systems like K-12 education as sites for both conformity and resistance, and creates tools for those navigating them to build something better.
Central to her practice is translating these concepts into action through direct engagement with communities. Her projects often take the form of workshops, public installations, and Risograph-printed posters and booklets. These include Class Set, which has provided over 22,000 free art prints to K-12 classrooms worldwide, and Organizing Power, which has provided 2,000 workers with unionization tools in the form of art booklets at museums, nonprofits, and universities across the country.
Her press, Current Editions, publishes artist booklets and ephemera highlighting niche histories and public discourse. They are held in the collections of SFMOMA, Columbia University, and Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her work has been supported by Southern Exposure, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, ICA San Francisco, and the Andy Warhol Foundation. She has completed public art projects with the San Francisco Arts Commission and the City of Emeryville, and was included in PM Press's book Teaching Resistance. Aaland has been an artist-in-residence at Facebook and was a 2018–2019 Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Fellow.
